Rabbits, Rabbits
2022
Rabbits, Rabbits explores the nature of luck, superstition, and ritual in a small desert town. When dreams bleed into reality and coincidence comes into question, how will Jack, on the eve of his wedding, make sense of this surreal and ever-changing world?
This piece was created through the Sarah Lawrence College Theatre Spring 2022 Devised Residency, with rituals collected from the greater SLC community. It was initially performed in October of 2022 at Sarah Lawrence College, and then again in December of 2022 at Dixon Place in NYC as part of Puppet Blok.
Lead Artist's Note:
The title of this show, “Rabbits Rabbits,” is referential to a monthly tradition passed down to me by my family. On the first day of each month, the first thing one must say upon waking is “rabbits rabbits”. In doing so, you guarantee good luck for the rest of the month. It’s a somewhat difficult tradition, as it relies on one’s ability to remember a charm while still mostly asleep. This puppet show developed from a fascination with rituals such as these-traditions that are equally jovial and serious. What is it to try to control one’s environment in a world where so much is left up to chance-to luck?
I am immensely grateful to the excellent team of writers, devising members, puppeteers, fabricators, choreographers, musicians, designers, crew members, professors and producers that made this dense little show possible-as well as to the Sarah Lawrence College Theatre Program. It really does take a village, and I’m so happy that I have had the privilege of being a part of this one.
